Traditional coffee shop «Η ωραία Κρήτη» in Arolithos Village!

A historical retrospect!

The traditional Greek coffee shop is an old institution of the Greek society. At first, it was dedicated almost exclusively to men. It is a place of gathering for card games, sports and politics talk and of course, tasting Greek coffee, handmade sweets and tasty appetizers to accompany your wine and raki.

A loud and alive place, where everything is in movement, noise from chatting and disagreements, but also a place to reminisce about the old times.

Our coffee shop during the winter!

Our coffee house

Our coffee house

«In our village’s coffee shop, with the wood burning stove, the traditional delights, the sweet smelling coffee and the daily chats…»

….are certainly vivid images for the elders and stories for the younger and it describes perfectly our own little coffee shop «Η ωραία Κρήτη».

Wooden chairs and corresponding tables, heat from the stove, sweet and salty tastes for merrymakers «μερακλήδες» as we call them. The complimentary food and drinks of our menu are made with pure ingredients and always served with a smile at exceptionally low prices!

…and during the summer

The same warm and quaint atmosphere, is maintained during the summer as well, where we transfer in the coffee shop’s patio. The briskness and the shadow offered by the trees in combination with the calm and the sounds of nature, constitute Arolithos the ideal countryside getaway, where the visitors can enjoy their favorite beverage along with local handmade products!

Ελληνικός καφές & Λουκούμι

Ελληνικός καφές & Λουκούμι

The sweet taste of loukoumi makes contrast with the bitter taste of coffee – and this is especially important for those who drink their coffee without sugar!

Water is important customary to serve coffee with a glass of water. Have you ever wondered why? Drinking water before coffee helps your taste buds to feel the real taste of coffee and drinking water after helps you rinse your throat from any traces of sediment.

One by one the steps for a delicious Greek!

coffee production

1. Take a clean and dry coffee pot with a dry throat. Fill the pot with so many cups of water (preferably lukewarm) and those coffees that we want to build.
2. With the special spoon put a spoonful Loumidis for every cup of sugar and as much desire.
3. Then place the pot on medium fire center to heat the entire pot and stir slowly until dissolved coffee and sugar (attention after this point should not mix the coffee again).
4. Once the coffee begins to inflate, to remove the fire and hit the pot 2-3 times light in the counter. Then bloated coffee settles for a while.
5. Return the pot immediately on the fire and when the coffee begins to inflate again, to remove from fire, wait a few seconds and slowly we serve the classic cup of Greek coffee.

Ηomemade halva with sesame, tahini & honey!

An amazing and healthy recipe! Cook a delicious dessert, for you and your family with minimal effort! Lets go! :)

χαλβάς με σουσάμι, ταχίνι & μέλι

halva with sesame, tahini & honey

1 ½ cup Sesame

3 to 4 tablespoons tahini

¾ cup honey

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

3 tablespoons cocoa

Mix in a deep dish well all the ingredients to be homogenized.

We divide our halva into two parts. In one place add the cocoa and knead the halva to incorporate the cocoa. If we want we can add some more honey to the cocoa halva.

In a small cake form (long or round, we put the halva and press it with the fingers to take the form)

We can lay it first and over it with cocoa.

Put for an hour in the refrigerator. Serve it in small pieces with cinnamon or nuts.

Bon Appétit!
